Kiwano Horned Melon and Lychee Update

Posted by: admin

Previously I posted about trying to grow Kiwano Horned Melon and Lychee from seed - see Attempting to Grow Kiwano Horned Melon Seeds and Planting The Dried Horned Melon Seeds (and ly...

Unfortunately, despite keeping the pots in the greenhouse and watering daily, none of the seeds grew - I am really disappointed.

I have kept some of the seeds back and will have another go in May next year.

***UPDATE*** - something did start to happen after a couple of months - see Kiwano Horned Melon Seeds Finally Got Going.....

Picking Plums

Tagged in: Plums

We have been picking our first Victoria Plums - there are loads, and I am worried that they will suffer the same fate as the cherries at the hands of the wasps. I picked a few plums  this morning and there was an over-ripe one with a small bore hole in it, and I saw a wasp land on it, and disappear down the hole. I saw red, bearing in mind that I would estimate that 20% of the cherries were lost to the wasp problem - and 20% is a conservative estimate. I picked the affected plum, put it onto the grass and stamped on it - bye bye smelly old wasp!

Potting More Pineberry Runners

Posted by: admin

As it appears I may have missed the pineberry fruiting season - see Lack Of Fruit On Pineberry Explained, and that the plant is throwing out lots of runners, I have set about planting them. From reading about the pineberry, it appears that it yields smaller and fewer fruit than a strawberry, so it makes perfect sense to grow a lot of them in time for next year.

Yellow Raspberries Still Flowering

Posted by: admin

The yellow raspberries are still flowering and producing good fruit as we get into August. There are lots of flowers and fruit. From recollection, it was producing fruit later than my red raspberries last year. The season for the red raspberry varieties I have is just about up - I am now only getting the odd one.
